Week 2: 11/11/15

Week two began and I am so glad because I was way less stressed and felt comfortable there because everyone was not as stressed because it wasn’t report time which was a relief.

Everyone was on the ball, intern wise, and all of the stats were pretty much done. So after a few to help complete them straight onto the Nutshell blog. I wrote about Carrie Bickmore’s foundation, AND, it was finally published on the page which was a good feeling. Always good to be verified that you are dong the right thing and a good job.

Week 1: 4/11/15

Week 1: 4/11/16

First thought of the first day, stressing about how long it is going to take me to drive there. So I left 2 hours for traffic and any unforeseen events. It took me like 1hr 15mins, so I was there early to say the least!

When it was time to go in I was greeted by the lovely Hollie, who introduced me to everyone and they told me their names, clients and favourite movie,  they’d very clearly done this on the reg.

She went through what I’d be doing when I came in each week. I got my own set up, computer and desk next to the other intern Quok.

We started with stat analysis of the social media pages, wrote a blog post for the Get Glossy blog, The Nutshell. I had major first day jitters! I accidentally unplugged the screen which deleted all my work, then the keyboard wouldn’t connect, so I had set myself back from the get go, haha only me!

There was a template on photoshop that I was to make my own, so they could add it to their wall of interns which was pretty cool, it’s not up yet though.

Following this, a template was made for me to shadow and complete tasks for people throughout the office. Hollie gave me a chart that had everyone’s name and desk location, thank god because I had forgotten everyone!

WRAP UP:
The first day was fun but overwhelming, it was a busy time for everyone because they were writing reports. But time went really fast and I got over feeling nervous pretty fast.

Step One: How to Land an Internship

With partaking in an internship being a compulsory unit in my public relations degree at Deakin, I was always warned that finding somewhere is really tricky and to start looking early. So that is exactly what I did. I contacted so many people and companies that even though I tried to keep a record, I couldn't.

My aim was to find a company that was young and relaxed in the claimed "fluff" industry or "sexy" pr/marketing. I wanted this because I thought it would be a great way to get a feel of the industry and if I was ever to make a mistake it wouldn't be a massive deal.

Here are some of my documented interactions of trying to find a placement, after sending out my best  attempt of an email of interest:

To (NAME),

My name is Grace Lean, I am a third year public relations student at Deakin University. I am emailing you today to ask about (COMPANY) internship positions. I am very interested to intern at this company after looking through your online platforms.
The position would be ideal for me to occur over the summer period of late this year, early next year.
I love studying public relations and I am so eager to get out there and experience it for real! I am hard working, easy to get along with and organised. I will strive to be the best intern you've ever had:)!
I have attached my cover letter and of course my resume that I'd love for you, (or whoever needs to), to look over it and consider me as your next intern.

Eager for your response.

Kind regards,

Grace Lean

(You shouldn't do what I did and have a bulk email that you just insert in the companies names, I catered some to the company and some I just did this.) -- I made my email to the company I got in the end all about Get Glossy and wasn't a bulk send out, that's why you should always make it all about the company you are applying for.

Response: Hi Grace,

Thank you for getting in touch.  Unfortunately we don't currently offer internship positions.

Who in the Zoo:

This was a hiccup on my behalf, this company is actually an HR recruiting agency which was advertising for a fashion PR role and I thought that the description of the offered position was the description for Who in the Zoo, wrong. I got to the point of almost accepting the position until I realized this and awkwardly had to decline the position, but luckily it was in Sydney, so I used that as my excuse rather than my stupid mistake.

Spice and Soul:

This was interesting. I applied to this company with the same pitch and information and unlike the other people who have email replied to me they called me straight away with their extreme interest in me being their intern, and how they have merged spice and soul with another company and are now iD Collective. I raced to my mentor at uni and told him my exciting news and his response was so far from what I wanted to hear. He told me that when this company was Spice and Soul there had been past Deakin students that had interned there and been exploited and not learned anything about the industry, just been used for coffee runs, cleaning, making copy all sorts of things. This is not what an internship is supposed to be, and after multiple complaints from multiple universities iD Collective still does this, so I would not be approved to intern there, this is what I was told. My personal experience with them was really great in the beginning but they began to mess me around with emails along the lines of.

Response:
Hey Grace,

Sorry we haven’t been in touch it has been a busy time, would it be okay to allocate a time to meet up and discuss this position.

I would follow p by giving a number of follow up dates and then get no response, a week or so would pass and no response and then I would then get the same email from a different team member saying the same thing. This happened three times before I couldn’t be bothered with it anymore and decided to move on.

Hopefully iD Collective can prove me wrong in the future with a glimmering reputation, but for now I’m not too impressed.

** There was a number of other places, so many places that I cant even recall, but these are the places that contacted me back with a decline or lack of positions available **

At this point hope is dwindling and doubt is creeping in big time! But then….

A social media and marketing agency that a classmate from uni had previously interned at and recommended to me got back to me, after emailing them and getting a response of no positions available. A place had opened up and they asked me in for an interview and I started 2 weeks after!

They have taken me on board for a full day a week for the entire summer break, and for Deakin students we all know how bloody long that is!

I’ll be writing in week by week logs about my time here so I have a recorder for future work I have to do, or for future Get Glossy interns that stumble upon this looking for some insight.

Thank you Get Glossy!

High End VS. Dupes

When you have an addiction of any sort, you get to a point where your taste matures. This is unavoidable and when it happens it is a little scary as to just what your addition can do to your bank account, and the little remorse that comes with it.

Here’s what I mean.
It is very clear amongst my friends and family that I have a crazy addiction to makeup. It has got to a point now that I can no longer call it a healthy addiction. This point of no return became apparent to me when I bought the “Soleil Tan De Chanel Bronzer.” I had wanted this for such a long time but could not justify the $67 price tag. But as my makeup collection grew and my appreciation for luxury makeup expanded, this price tag became more and more reasonable to me.

Of course it came to a point when I bought it, I’m just going to say that there is still no remorse or buyers regret here. So if you may allow some time for me to rant and rave about this incredible product.
No Flash

This soleil, or in other words “firm mousse” like product, is a smooth lush product with a colour to suit multiple skin tones that can flawlessly be applied under or over powder products. This is a product that all makeup obsessed girls and guys need to truly experience one of the best products out there. When applied with a dense buffing brush, it leaves a natural bronze kiss to your cheeks, temples and hairline. The packaging is luxurious and timeless and the product is said to last for years. And after buying it and using it for a number of months now, I have to say; I’d pay $100 for this product. There are so many reviews online that will agree with every word I have said as well.

However knowing that there are some people still out there left unconvinced. I tried to find an affordable alternative. This was only done with moderate success.

The alternative I came closest to finding is the ColourPop bronzer in “poolside”.
With Flash

Although this is a nice product, knowledge and experience needs to be accompanied with it. This product will rub your powder products off if applied over the top, same goes with some liquid products depending on what brush you use. I use a similar brush as what I use with the Chanel product, but I apply it to my face firstly with my finger and buff it in with the brush.

This ColourPop Dupe of sorts is a high maintenance product and I believe even though it is $8 USD, the hassle free Chanel product is worth the $59 price difference.

Even though I think that this is a reasonable thing to think, I know people will still think I’m crazy. However I also know I am not alone in thinking this! If you are up for the challenge of finding a better product for cheaper than go for your life, but I am happy with paying $67 for this epic bronzer.
