Step One: How to Land an Internship

With partaking in an internship being a compulsory unit in my public relations degree at Deakin, I was always warned that finding somewhere is really tricky and to start looking early. So that is exactly what I did. I contacted so many people and companies that even though I tried to keep a record, I couldn't.

My aim was to find a company that was young and relaxed in the claimed "fluff" industry or "sexy" pr/marketing. I wanted this because I thought it would be a great way to get a feel of the industry and if I was ever to make a mistake it wouldn't be a massive deal.

Here are some of my documented interactions of trying to find a placement, after sending out my best  attempt of an email of interest:

To (NAME),

My name is Grace Lean, I am a third year public relations student at Deakin University. I am emailing you today to ask about (COMPANY) internship positions. I am very interested to intern at this company after looking through your online platforms.
The position would be ideal for me to occur over the summer period of late this year, early next year.
I love studying public relations and I am so eager to get out there and experience it for real! I am hard working, easy to get along with and organised. I will strive to be the best intern you've ever had:)!
I have attached my cover letter and of course my resume that I'd love for you, (or whoever needs to), to look over it and consider me as your next intern.

Eager for your response.

Kind regards,

Grace Lean

(You shouldn't do what I did and have a bulk email that you just insert in the companies names, I catered some to the company and some I just did this.) -- I made my email to the company I got in the end all about Get Glossy and wasn't a bulk send out, that's why you should always make it all about the company you are applying for.

Thank you for getting in touch.  Unfortunately we don't currently offer internship positions.

Who in the Zoo:

This was a hiccup on my behalf, this company is actually an HR recruiting agency which was advertising for a fashion PR role and I thought that the description of the offered position was the description for Who in the Zoo, wrong. I got to the point of almost accepting the position until I realized this and awkwardly had to decline the position, but luckily it was in Sydney, so I used that as my excuse rather than my stupid mistake.

Spice and Soul:

This was interesting. I applied to this company with the same pitch and information and unlike the other people who have email replied to me they called me straight away with their extreme interest in me being their intern, and how they have merged spice and soul with another company and are now iD Collective. I raced to my mentor at uni and told him my exciting news and his response was so far from what I wanted to hear. He told me that when this company was Spice and Soul there had been past Deakin students that had interned there and been exploited and not learned anything about the industry, just been used for coffee runs, cleaning, making copy all sorts of things. This is not what an internship is supposed to be, and after multiple complaints from multiple universities iD Collective still does this, so I would not be approved to intern there, this is what I was told. My personal experience with them was really great in the beginning but they began to mess me around with emails along the lines of.

Hey Grace,

Sorry we haven’t been in touch it has been a busy time, would it be okay to allocate a time to meet up and discuss this position.

I would follow p by giving a number of follow up dates and then get no response, a week or so would pass and no response and then I would then get the same email from a different team member saying the same thing. This happened three times before I couldn’t be bothered with it anymore and decided to move on.

Hopefully iD Collective can prove me wrong in the future with a glimmering reputation, but for now I’m not too impressed.

** There was a number of other places, so many places that I cant even recall, but these are the places that contacted me back with a decline or lack of positions available **

At this point hope is dwindling and doubt is creeping in big time! But then….

A social media and marketing agency that a classmate from uni had previously interned at and recommended to me got back to me, after emailing them and getting a response of no positions available. A place had opened up and they asked me in for an interview and I started 2 weeks after!

They have taken me on board for a full day a week for the entire summer break, and for Deakin students we all know how bloody long that is!

I’ll be writing in week by week logs about my time here so I have a recorder for future work I have to do, or for future Get Glossy interns that stumble upon this looking for some insight.

Thank you Get Glossy!
